WHY YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT BUILDING MUSCLE

May 05, 2022

Building muscle is not just for performing a “gun show” at the beach - there’s tons of benefits both physically and mentally!

Just a few of the benefits, include:

1. Increased muscle mass
2. Stronger bones
3. Joint flexibility
4. Weight control
5. Improved balance

As We Age, We Lose Muscle Mass = Sarcopenia

Aging is associated with a number of physiologic and functional declines including falls, increased risk for CVD, frailty, reduced quality of life and a decrease in independence.

Contributing factors are loss of muscle mass and strength as we age, a phenomenon called sarcopenia. Muscle mass and strength loss related to aging can start as early as your 30s but can really advance in your 50s and beyond.

What The Research Tells Us

Strength-training exercises done regularly (e.g., 2-3x per week) have the ability to combat muscle mass reductions, frailty, preserve bone density, our independence and vitality.

It also has the ability to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and numerous chronic diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, and type 2 diabetes, while also improving sleep and reducing depression.
