10 WAYS TO GET RE-MOTIVATED AND STAY MOTIVATED TO EXERCISE

Mar 07, 2023

We ALL go through times of feeling motivated and not so motivated! Motivation is a state of mind, a feeling, and that's why it's completely normal to experience highs and lows. You are not alone if you're lacking motivation, but that's one of the reasons why we don't rely on motivation alone to stick to our exercise routines or habits, we rely on strategies!

Read on for 10 strategies to help you get motivated to exercise and stay on track.

1. Set Realistic Goals

When you set yourself a goal, make sure it’s realistic and achievable. Aiming too high can be discouraging and can lead to giving up and quickly. Break your goals down into smaller, more manageable chunks and take it one step at a time. You’ll be more likely to stay motivated when you can see your progress and you can accomplish your goals!

2. Celebrate Yourself

Every little success is a step in the right direction. Celebrating your wins can give you a much-needed boost of confidence and aid as a wonderful reminder that you can achieve your goals. Use your successes as motivation to keep pushing forward and to ensure you don't give up.

3. Make it a Social Event

Invite friends or family to join you on your walks, runs, or bike rides. Not only will it be more fun, you’ll also be more likely to stick with it. You can use social media to join online communities, or you can challenge your friends to get active with you. This way, you’ll have others to support and encourage you along the way and perhaps hold you accountable!

4. Change Up Your Routine

Keep your workouts interesting by trying something new. This could be a different type of exercise like swimming or yoga, or even a different location like the beach or park. Changing up your routine will help keep you from experiencing boredom, and keep things engaging and fun.

5. Listen to Music

Music is a great way to get motivated to exercise. Put together a playlist of your favourite tunes and listen to them while you work out. Music can help you stay focused and energized, and can even make the time go by faster.

6. Track Your Progress

Use an app or a fitness tracker to keep track of your workouts and progress. Seeing your progress in a tangible way can be a great motiv. This doesn't have to be weight related or involve using a scale either! There's so many ways you can track progress that has NOTHING to do with weight, such as: noticing if your pants feel looser, feeling stronger and having to increase your weights, taking note of your energy levels, sleep quality, the amount of days you consistently workout and overall stress levels.

7. Find an Exercise Buddy Or Hire a Coach

If you’re having trouble motivating yourself, find someone to exercise with or hire a coach! Having an accountability partner or coach can help you stay on track and help to prevent you from falling off.

8. Sign Up For a Class

If you’re looking for motivation to exercise, sign up for a class! There are plenty of classes available for all levels of fitness. Group classes can be especially motivating because you’ll have the support of the instructor and the other participants.

At MOVEHAPPY, we meet you where you're at in your fitness journey, have classes to suit anyMOOD, anyBODY, anyLEVEL, and provide you with a weekly fitness schedule that's sustainable, and that will help keep you focused and accountable to your goals! 9. Make Your Goals Super Duper Small

There's no such thing as a goal too small, especially when you're first starting out. Your goal can be as small as aiming to do 1 set of squats per day, going for 2 walks per week or simply taking your daily vitamins.

The goal is to build UP your confidence and self-belief, to create positive momentum and consistency within your weekly routine!

Don't ever forget it's the little steps that lead to the bigger ones. We all need to start somewhere!

10. Quit Being So Hard on Yourself

Self-compassion is the secret sauce to becoming more resilient. We give ourselves support and encouragement rather than being harsh and judgmental when challenges arise in our lives.

The health journey is not about being perfect, that would be impossible! Instead, we focus on progress, being kind to ourselves when times do get tough and doing the best that we can, no matter what season of life we're in!
